Preparing for Acupuncture
Instructions to patients receiving Acupuncture Treatment:
- Have a light meal before treatment
- Continue medications prescribed by your doctor
- Do not take alcohol, barbiturates or tranquilisers for four hours before treatment
- Be well rested if possible
- Inform the acupuncturist if you are or may be pregnant
Instructions to patients after an Acupuncture Treatment:
- Rest for two hours after you go home if possible
- If treatment is for a painful condition, avoid strenuous activity for 2 days after a treatment even if you are free of pain
- Take pain pills or other medications as directed by your doctor; record the amount taken so that you can discuss with your therapist
- Do not take any alcohol or caffeine for two hours after treatment. Do not smoke for one hour after treatment
- Some people obtain relief immediately; some require several treatments before responding. Some do not respond
- Occasionally symptoms become worse before they improve. This usually lasts 1-2 days
- The number of treatments required varies with each person, and with each injury or condition
