Preparing for Acupuncture

Instructions to patients receiving Acupuncture Treatment:

Have a light meal before treatment
Continue medications prescribed by your doctor
Do not take alcohol, barbiturates or tranquilisers for four hours before treatment
Be well rested if possible
Inform the acupuncturist if you are or may be pregnant

Rest for two hours after you go home if possible
If treatment is for a painful condition, avoid strenuous activity for 2 days after a treatment even if you are free of pain
Take pain pills or other medications as directed by your doctor; record the amount taken so that you can discuss with your therapist
Do not take any alcohol or caffeine for two hours after treatment. Do not smoke for one hour after treatment
Some people obtain relief immediately; some require several treatments before responding. Some do not respond
Occasionally symptoms become worse before they improve. This usually lasts 1-2 days
The number of treatments required varies with each person, and with each injury or condition
